LISTEN TO MEOWS PRODUCED IN DIFFERENT CONTEXTS AND MENTAL STATES

Below you can listen to the melodies of meows produced in different contexts and mental states. These examples have been generated by combining the same meow vocalisation (produced by one single cat) and the average length and melody contour of the meows produced by the cats analysed for every different context and mental state.

MEOWING IN DIFFERENT CONTEXTS

The following video clips show and play back the same meow produced by the same cat (repeated twice in every video), but with different lengts and melody contours (they all have the average length and melody contour of the meows produced by the cats recorded and analysed in the same context in the Meowsic project).

MEOWING IN DIFFERENT MENTAL STATES

The following video clips show and play back the same meows (three in every video), but with different lengts and melody contours (they all have the average length and melody contour of the meows produced by the cats recorded and analysed in the same mental state in the Meowsic project).

NATURAL (REAL) EXAMPLES OF MEOWING IN DIFFERENT MENTAL STATES

The above examples are all manipulated and resynthesised meows based on the average values of our analyses. Although not all cats used these melodies, many did. Below you can listen to two real examples of one food context (and content) meow and one transport box context (and stressed) meow produced by the same cat. Notice that there are more differences than just the length and melody. If you listen carefully you can probably hear that the vowel sounds are also different. We hope to examine these differences in a future project.
